Those coliseums wouldn't fill up on their own. If you were looking to make a quick buck and/or get rid of a child, it was a fairly common practice to sell your child into slavery to become a worker for some rich person - and hopefully get an education - or simply become a gladiator.
Underground
Nicknamed the Eternal City, Rome was originally built primarily underground. This helped with the idea that no matter what happened to the rest of the world, Rome would stand strong and survive it all.
