9. The Proboscis Monkey: Borneo's Odd Long-Nosed Wonder

The proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus), from Borneo, stands out with its huge, drooping nose. Especially large in males, it's thought to lure mates and boost calls. Nicknamed "Dutch monkey" for its supposed likeness to Dutch settlers, it adds a humorous twist.
Suited for a semi-aquatic life, these monkeys swim expertly with partly webbed limbs. They dwell in mangroves and river zones, eating leaves, seeds, and unripe fruits. Multi-chambered stomachs digest tough plants other primates can't.
Highly social, they form harems or bachelor groups, but deforestation and palm oil farms shrink their numbers. Conservation is crucial to save this quirky primate and its delicate habitat.
