7. The Elusive Okapi: Africa's Hidden Forest Treasure
The okapi (Okapia johnstoni), dubbed the "forest giraffe," is a rare and shy mammal unique to the Democratic Republic of the Congo's dense rainforests. It blends traits of a horse's body, zebra-striped legs, and a giraffe-like long neck, its closest kin.
Its rich, chocolate-brown coat offers perfect camouflage in the forest's dappled light. Males sport small, skin-covered ossicones for dominance fights. A 30 cm (12-inch) prehensile tongue grabs leaves and buds from the understory.
Despite its survival skills, habitat loss, poaching, and regional unrest threaten it. Projects like the Okapi Conservation Project strive to save this mysterious species and Congo's rich biodiversity, highlighting the urgency of protecting fragile ecosystems.
