4. The Gharial: A Rare Crocodilian with a Distinctive Snout

The gharial (Gavialis gangeticus), a critically endangered crocodilian from northern India and Nepal's rivers, is unmistakable with its long, slender snout lined with over 100 sharp, interlocking teeth. This unique snout excels at snaring fish, the core of its diet.
Male gharials sport a bulbous tip on their snout, called a ghara, used for calls and mating displays. Though among the largest crocodilians—males reach 6 meters (20 feet)—they pose little risk to humans or big mammals, as their jaws aren't built for larger prey. Their numbers have plummeted from habitat destruction, overfishing, and human disruption. Conservation, through breeding programs and habitat safeguards, is critical to save this ancient species, vital for river ecosystem balance.
